- Search file
-
-
-
-
- Once a file has been opened, you may search it for any combination of
- three or more characters by pressing [S] in response to the Main
- Command Menu. If there are two or more files opened, the program will
- list the files and ask you to select one to begin the search with.
- Type the number of the file.
-
- If only one file is opened, you will not be asked to select a file.
-
- After you have selected a file for searching, or the program defaults
- to the only open file, the following screen will appear:
-
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------
- |Search: FILENAME |

-
- <F1> gives you a brief summary of search commands.
-
- <F2> is used to browse through a file without specifying a search key.
-
- <F3> erases any previous search keys. The keys may be edited by using
- the insert and delete keys and by overtyping.
-
- <F4> is used to specify Search Options.
-
- <Esc> returns you to the Main Menu.
-
-
-
- SEARCH OPTIONS
-
- Press <F4> in response to the "Search Key:" prompt to specify search
- options. The Search Option Window will be displayed and the Search
- Options Menu will be displayed at the bottom of the screen:

- Display Format lists the record number and first line of each record
- found during a search.

-
-
-
- OUTPUT FILE
-
- You may specify the name of a file to which you can output (write)
- records found during the search. The file may be a 3by5, ASCII,
- WordStar or WordPerfect file. Records output during a search are
- appended to the end of the output file.
-
-
-
- OUTPUT MODE
-
- As each record is located during a search, the record is displayed
- on the screen. During a manual search (see below) you may direct
- that the record be printed or that it be written to an output file.
- The Output Mode Command allows you to automatically print and/or output
- to a file each record as it is found. For example, you can direct
- that as each record is found during a search, it will be displayed
- on the screen and printed.
-
-
- COUNT
-
- A count of the number of records that match the search key is kept
- for each search. Normally the count is displayed at the end of the
- search. You may bypass this display by typing [N] in response to
- the Count Command
-
-
- MODE
-
- The search procedure may be manual (the program stops after each record
- is found and displayed) or automatic (the entire search is performed
- without pausing). The automatic mode is useful for printing select
- records, counting the number of hits in a file, and for copying records
- to the output file.

- SEARCH KEYS
-
- SINGLE SEARCH KEYS
-
- A single search key can contain one or more characters. For example
- "cart", "carton" and "arto" are all valid search keys that will locate
- the word "carton". Any one search key may be up to 60 characters in
- length. If a search key is three or more characters in length, the
- index is used and the search is very rapid. If the search key is less
- than three characters in length, each source record is searched
- sequentially, resulting in somewhat slower searches.
-
- To initiate a search, type a search key and press <Enter>. For
- example, typing [adams] <Enter> will initiate a search for all records
- that contain the name Adams.
-
-
- MULTIPLE SEARCH KEYS
-
- Records that contain two or more keys may be found by using the logical
- operators "AND" (&) or "OR" (|). The "AND" operator is represented
- by the ampersand (&). The "OR" operator by the vertical bar(|).
-
- For example, to search for records with the terms "computer" and
- "Basic", type [computer&basic] <Enter> in response to the "Enter Key:"
- prompt. Only records with both terms "computer" and "Basic" will be
- found and displayed.
-
- Typing [computer|basic] <Enter> will locate all records that contain
- either the term "computer" or "Basic" or both "computer" and "Basic".
-
- Typing [computer&basic|computer&fortran] <Enter> will locate all
- records that contain either the terms "computer" and "Basic", "compu-
- ter" and "FORTRAN", or both "computer" and "Basic" and "computer" and
- "FORTRAN".
-
-
-
- MULTIPLE FIELDS
-
- If the file you are going to search has two or more fields, you can
- specify that a key be present in a particular field, search the
- record globally without regard to fields, or search globally for one or
- more keys and at the same time search specific fields for other keys.
- You may also combine keys in searches.

- SEARCHING

- For example, a file with three fields:
-
- FIELD A: NAME
- FIELD B: HOME (home address: street, city, state and zip code)
- FIELD C: WORK (business address: street, city, state and zip code)
-
- The following searches may be performed:
-
- 1. Find all records with the name John Smith in the name field
- and the word township anywhere within the record.
-
- Field Search key
- Global township
- NAME: John Smith
- HOME:
- WORK:
-
-
- 2. Find all records of all John Smiths or Jane Jones who live
- in Philadelphia.
-
-
- Field Search key
- Global
- NAME: John Smith|Jane Jones
- HOME: Philadelphia
- WORK:
-
- 3. Find all individuals who live in Maryland and work in the
- District of Columbia
-
- Field Search key
- Global
- NAME:
- HOME: Maryland
- WORK: Washington|District&Columbia
-
- In this example the address may have been entered as
- Washington DC or District of Columbia. The search will find
- either District&Columbia or Washington.
